European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier supports the so-called Canada Plus agreement on Brexit, rather than the Chequers proposal put forward by the British government, according to a report by ITV citing multiple anonymous sources. "The only trade deal the EU’s lead negotiator Michel Barnier will countenance is [David] Davis’s... Free Trade Agreement, what he called Canada Plus, rather than any version of May’s Chequers plan," the report stated.
The modified Canada model, favored by former Brexit Secretary David Davis (pictured left), would see the UK strike a free trade deal with the union which would include the service industries. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Theresa May's Chequers plan would give London the authority over tariffs and an independent trade policy. Barnier warned last week there will be "no single market a la carte" in the Brexit agreement, and that Norway-style relationship with the EU is available, "but under the conditions Norway accepted."
