Bessent: Each country to get tariff number on April 2

EPA-EFE/JIM LO SCALZO

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday that each country targeted by US trade restrictions "will get a tariff number" on April 2, when they come into force. He said tariffs could be low for some countries, adding that "15% of countries will make up the bulk" of imposed levies.

Speaking to Fox Business, Bessent said it would be "silly" to ask the Trump administration for guarantees that there will not be a recession, although he insisted the underlying economy is healthy and there is "no reason" to expect a recession. He added that US President Donald Trump asked him to "rethink" the sanctions regime, arguing that it is "undermining the dollar's reserve status."
