Chipmakers' suppliers said to be reexamining Mexico plans

The suppliers for Nvidia Corporation and Intel Corporation are examining their plans to manufacture the parts for semiconductors in Mexico and seeking a way to comply with United States President-elect Donald Trump's prospective tariffs on goods coming from that country, Nikkei Asia reported on Wednesday.

A source from one of the two companies' suppliers said that "[w]e have quickly started to calculate how many components and parts we might need to produce in the US in order to ... meet [Trump's] country of origin requirements." They said one option is to continue to produce smaller and less expensive parts in Mexico and then assemble them into the final product in the US.

A person from a supplier for Nvidia, Alphabet Inc.'s Google, and Amazon.com Inc. stated that their company is refraining from further investments in Mexico as "[i]t could be a bit risky not to take Trump's words seriously." Another one called for waiting for Trump's inauguration and the official introduction of the tariffs.
