A group of United States Democratic senators, among which are Senator Richard Blumenthal and Senator Elizabeth Warren, pushed for the country's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate Twitter, it was revealed in a letter released on Thursday.

The group called for a "vigorous oversight" of the social media platform's consent decree with the FTC, adding that the official body should be looking into potential violations of consumer protection laws. The Democratic senators also stressed that Twitter's new CEO Elon Musk "underlined the integrity and safety of the platform. "

The letter notes that Musk announced new features "despite clear warnings those changes would be abused for fraud, scams, and dangerous impersonation." With key staff being let go and high executives resigning, the senators further called into question "whether personal data is adequately protected from misuse or breach."
