The European Commission requested on Tuesday that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) impose financial penalties on Poland after the country failed to fully comply with the court's previous ruling. In July, the ECJ ordered Poland to reverse its decisions limiting the powers of its judiciary after the EU launched an infringement procedure against the country.
The EU claims Poland agreed to dismantle the controversial Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court but it is "continuing some of its activities against judges, even though all those activities were supposed to be fully suspended." The Commission is asking the ECJ to "impose a daily penalty payment on Poland for as long as the measures imposed by the Court's order are not fully implemented."
