European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Friday she is "deeply concerned" by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal's ruling on the primacy of European Union laws. The court decided on Thursday that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) violates "the principle of rule of law, the principle of the primacy of the Polish constitution as well as the principle of retaining sovereignty in the process of European integration."
Von der Leyen said she has "instructed the Commission's services to analyze [the decision] thoroughly and swiftly," stating the EU will then "decide on next steps." She added the union's "utmost priority" is the protection of Polish citizens, but also that "EU citizens, as well as companies doing business in Poland, need the legal certainty that EU rules are fully applied in Poland." She repeated that by joining the EU, member states agree that "EU law has primacy over national law, including constitutional provisions."
