Interpol asked Chinese authorities to provide official information on the international police organization's head Meng Hongwei (pictured center), AP reported on Saturday.

A statement from Interpol said: "Interpol has requested through official law enforcement channels clarification from China's authorities on the status of Interpol President Meng Hongwei. Interpol's General Secretariat looks forward to an official response from China's authorities to address concerns over the President's well-being."

Earlier, Hong Kong media reported that Meng is under investigation in China. Meng, who served as the Chinese deputy public security minister, was allegedly taken for interrogation as soon as he landed in China a week ago. The Interpol president's wife reported him as missing in France where the family currently resides.
