Former Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Razak was charged on Wednesday with criminal breach of trust and corruption following a graft scandal related to the country’s state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhard (1MBD). Najib, who served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 2009 to 2018, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
New Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad reopened the investigation into how $10.6 million was funneled through the state-owned fund into Najib’s bank account. Each of the charges brought against the former prime minister could result in a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
