North Korea conducted a test of the Haeil-5-23 "underwater nuclear weapons system," the country's state news agency KCNA reported.
Pyongyang stated the test came as a response to the latest military drills conducted by the United States, South Korea and Japan.
Earlier this week, the three countries conducted naval exercises in waters off South Korea's Jeju island amid rising tensions with North Korea.
