New York Governor Kathy Hochul (pictured), issued a state of emergency declaration due to the rising number of monkeypox cases in the state.
The executive order enables the state officials to respond "more swiftly," allowing health professionals to take steps to get citizens vaccinated, as it extends the pool of eligible individuals who can administer shots. "Today's announcement builds on New York State's ongoing response efforts on monkeypox, including efforts to secure more vaccines, expand testing capacity, and distribute the latest information and resources to New Yorkers," Hochul stated.
The move comes after the state's health commissioner declared monkeypox an "imminent threat to public health" after a stark increase in statewide infections.
