Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that he believes that any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela is in violation of international laws, local media reported. During a telephone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart Nicholas Maduro, the Russian leader stressed that "destructive external meddling" was to blame for the political unrest in the country, adding that he will continue to support the current government in Caracas.

Putin's comments come after Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov already said earlier that Kremlin considers Nicholas Maduro to be the legitimate president of Venezuela.

On Wednesday, Venezuela's opposition leader and president of the National Assembly Juan Guaido declared himself the interim president of the country and was recognized as such by United States President Donald Trump, who also stressed he will consider all options regarding Venezuela.
