United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Rwandan President Paul Kagame to urge an immediate ceasefire in the region, according to the US State Department.
Rubio stated he was "deeply troubled" by the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically the takeover of the city of Goma by the Rwandan-backed March 23 (M23) rebel group. He "urged an immediate ceasefire in the region and for all parties to respect sovereign territorial integrity."
Rubio stated that the "overriding goal" of the US was securing a "durable peace that addresses security concerns and lays the foundation for a thriving regional economy. "
