Federal prosecutors have officially charged Ryan Wesley Routh with attempting to assassinate former United States President Donald Trump, CNN reported.

Routh, who was arrested after he pointed a rifle into the former president's Florida golf club, was originally charged with federal gun crimes. The 58-year-old stalked Trump for more than a month, with cell phone data placing him near the golf course as well as Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.

His case was randomly assigned to Judge Aileen Cannon, who oversaw and later threw out Trump's federal criminal classified documents case, the news agency said.
