The leader of South Korea's People Power Party Han Dong-hun (pictured second from right) called for the "swift" suspension of President Yoon Suk-yeol's powers "in light of newly discovered facts" amid the political fallout of Yoon's imposition of martial law on December 3.
"I believe it is necessary to promptly suspend President Yoon Suk-yeol from his duties to protect the Republic of Korea and its people," Han said during an emergency session of the party's leadership in Seoul. He further stated that Yoon ordered several opposition politicians to be detained during the short-lived state of emergency on Tuesday while adding that there was a risk of the president taking "radical" steps like attempting to reimpose martial law if he remained in office.
On Thursday, Yoon accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun but later rejected Army Chief of Staff Park An-su's offer to step down.
