South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun (pictured), a day after he ordered the imposition of martial law in the country, a move which triggered a political crisis and resulted in calls for him to step down.

Kim offered his resignation on Wednesday, shortly after it was announced that Yoon lifted martial law and after the parliament passed a resolution overturning the president's initial decree.

The president appointed Choi Byung-huk, South Korea's current ambassador to Saudi Arabia as the new defense minister.
