The leader of South Korea's Democratic Party (DP) Lee Jae-myung called for the members of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to show "courage" ahead of the vote to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol and amid political turmoil triggered by his decision to impose martial law.
"As individual constitutional institutions, lawmakers must reflect on why they exist and what their duties are. The people know the necessity of impeachment and are demanding it. PPP lawmakers understand what justice entails, but they are pressured to act against justice and the will of the people," he stated. He added that it is "imperative" that the impeachment motion be approved.
Yoon will deliver a televised address at 10 am local time on Saturday shortly before the parliament votes on his impeachment.
