NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg revealed on Wednesday at a press briefing that Ukraine's "irreversible" path to becoming a member of the organization means that NATO wants to send a "strong message" that the allies "really want" the country to join.

"Words are important and [they] create expectations and an agenda. [But] the language in the declaration is what we agreed to do," he said, adding that the alliance is now "taking all the coordination of most of the international aid and training." Furthermore, the fact that NATO now has a long-term commitment to Kiev, moves the country closer to becoming a member.

Previously, NATO announced it would provide Ukraine with at least €40 billion in military support over the next year.
