United States President Donald Trump signed proclamations lifting tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico. The US imposed punitive measures on imports from a number of countries in March 2018, imposing a 10% tariffs on aluminum and a 25% tariff on steel.
The proclamation stated that the US, Canada and Mexico successfully negotiated "satisfactory alternative means" to address the "threat to national security" that the imports posed. "These measures are expected to allow imports of aluminum from Canada and Mexico to remain stable at historical levels without meaningful increases, thus permitting the domestic capacity utilization to remain reasonably commensurate with the target level recommended in the Secretary [of Commerce]’s report," the document read. However, Trump also determined that it is "necessary and appropriate" to keep the current level of tariffs on the metals coming from other countries.
