United States President Donald Trump is expected to threaten to impose new tariffs on Mexican imports if Mexico does not decrease the number of migrants seeking asylum in the US, the Washington Post reported. The president should make the announcement on Friday, although sources said "some White House aides are trying to talk him out of it" for fear of consequences for the economy and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
However, another official told the newspaper that "there is broad support across the administration to push Mexico further." The news follows a previous report stating that Trump intends to trigger a process allowing him to submit the USMCA within 30 days. Last week, the US lifted tariffs on steel and aluminum from Mexico and Canada as part of the deal. Meanwhile, earlier on Thursday, Trump told reporters his announcement on Friday will be his "biggest statement so far on the border." It is unclear how his decision will affect the trade agreement.
