The United Kingdom's ambassador to the United States Kim Darroch (pictured right) has resigned after a diplomatic scandal which strained relations between the two countries, he announced on Wednesday.
In a letter to the Foreign Office, Darroch said that the current situation made it "impossible" for him to continue with his duties. He added that although his posting was not due to end until the end of the year, he believed that "the responsible course" in the current circumstances was to appoint a new ambassador. His resignation was accepted by the Foreign Office.
Darroch's departure brings to an end a saga which began when cables of him describing US President Donald Trump as as "insecure" and "incompetent" were leaked. In spite of the UK government's support, Trump subsequently said that he would "no longer deal with" Darroch and branded him "wacky" and a "pompous fool."
