British Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the proposed new football tournament called the Super League as a "cartel" that wouldn't serve the interest of the fans or the football sport. He assured that the government will back football entities, such as English Football Association (FA) and the Premier League (EPL) in the preventative steps they are taking.
"These clubs, these names originate from famous towns and cities in our country. I don't think it's right that they should be dislocated from their hometowns and cities and turned into international commodities and somehow circulate the planet," Johnson said.
The prime minister noted that the proposal contradicts the basic idea of competition in football and therefore the government does not support it and will go as far as finding a "legislative solution" to stop the European Super League from forming.
