The United States Department of State has pronounced on Monday Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism in response to its alleged ongoing support for international terrorist activity.
According to the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's official statement, this measure is intended to counter Castro's sheltering of deserters from Venezuela and the rest of the Americas. The sanctions mean that parties engaging in any commercial or political activity with Cuban entities will be penalized.
Today's decision returns Cuba to the State Sponsor of Terrorism list after it was removed in 2015 by the Obama Administration. Sitting President Donald Trump's administration is scheduled to leave the office in nine days.
