The United States House of Representatives adopted on Wednesday the bill to ban TikTok in the country unless the application changes owner ByteDance Ltd. with a result of 352–65.
The bill will now go for a vote in the Senate. It was tabled after representatives from both the Republican and Democratic parties as well as the country's intelligence services found that TikTok presents a national security threat and that China might use it to access users' data and interfere in the 2024 presidential election.
"The bill prevents app store availability or web hosting services in the US for ByteDance-controlled applications, including TikTok, unless the application severs ties to entities like ByteDance that are subject to the control of a foreign adversary," the explanation of the bill, officially titled Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, read.
