UNSPLASH / ABOODI_VESAKARAN

The United States is set to strike an agreement for the extraction of rare earth minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Financial Times reported, citing sources from the US State Department.

"The DRC has a significant share of critical resources needed for modern technologies. The US is open to discussing agreements in this area," one of the sources said, adding that this deal would create highly skilled jobs as well as help "integrate the republic into global and regional supply chains."

Last month, the Rwanda-backed March 23 (M23) rebels seized the city of Goma in the eastern part of the DRC.
