The United States sanctioned 33 Russian intelligence and defense officials under US President Donald Trump's executive order under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), the Department of State said in a release issued on Thursday.

Additionally, sanctions have been imposed on Chinese entity Equipment Development Department (EDD) and its director, Li Shangfu, "for engaging in significant transactions with Rosoboronexport, Russia’s main arms export entity," according to the statement. The significant transactions refer to the acquisition of Su-35 combat aircraft in 2017 and S-400 surface-to-air missile system-related equipment in 2018.

The sanctions are to be implemented immediately.
