Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado (pictured) was arrested Thursday after her motorcycle convoy came under fire from security forces as it left an anti-government protest in eastern Caracas, according to her aides.
Machado, who had been in hiding for months, made a public appearance earlier in the day, addressing a large crowd during a demonstration against President Nicolas Maduro. She urged supporters to continue the "fight and conquest of freedom" ahead of Friday's presidential inauguration, where both Maduro and opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez, who disputes Maduro's victory in last year's election, are expected to attend.
Her organization, Comando con Venezuela, reported on social media that security forces "violently intercepted" Machado's convoy in Chacao, firing at the motorcycles escorting her. The group stated they are working to get more details of her situation.
