Russian private military company Wagner Group took control of the Southern Military District building in Rostov, according to local reports on Saturday. The group's leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said that "all of us are ready to die, all 25,000, and then another 25,000," claiming that they are "dying for the Russian people."
The Wagner Group fighters are traveling to Russia from Ukraine as tensions between it and the Russian government flared on Friday. The Federal Security Service opened a criminal case against Prigozhin after he accused the Russian military of attacking his forces. The Rostov region Governor Vasily Golubev asked residents to "refrain from traveling to the city center and, if possible, not to leave your homes."
