Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, requesting that the organization adopt a resolution condemning the Russian missile attacks on his country's energy infrastructure.
Speaking via video link, the president called the shelling a "crime against humanity," saying that 70 missiles were fired at Ukrainian territory in a day, calling it a "Russian formula of terror." Zelensky urged the UN members to continue to support the resistance by providing additional air defense systems, as well as to ban Russia from voting related to its aggression against Ukraine.
The emergency session was scheduled upon Zelensky's request after Russian rockets destroyed infrastructure across Ukraine, causing massive power cuts in most of the country, as well as in neighboring Moldova.
