Chevron Corp. urged the White House to allow it to stay in Venezuela even if Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro remains in power, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday citing sources briefed on the matter.
According to the sources, days after Maduro claimed he won the presidential election, Chevron executives sat down with the White House and State Department officials to discuss the company's position. The oil giant told the officials that by being in the country it boosts global oil supplies as well as the United States' energy security. While the firm didn't call for specific policies, it made it clear to the Biden administration that it wants to continue pumping oil in Venezuela.
"Chevron regularly engages on energy-policy issues with stakeholders in Washington, and all over the globe. We have been a constructive presence in Venezuela for over a century, where we have dedicated investments and a large workforce," Chevron spokesperson Bill Turenne remarked.
