The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said that it continued conducting joint military drills around Taiwan on Friday.
The Eastern Theater Command's spokesperson, Li Xi, stated that the exercises are staged to test the PLA's capabilities to jointly take control of the battlefield, launch joint strikes and seize control of crucial areas.
After Beijing began the two-day drills, the Chinese Foreign Ministry branded them a "powerful response" to the "provocations" staged by those seeking Taiwan's independence, while the PLA described the exercises as a "punishment" for "separatist acts." On the other hand, Taiwan condemned the drills, calling them "irrational provocations" by Beijing.
