DC changes monkeypox vaccine strategy

EPA-EFE/YONHAP SOUTH KOREA OUT

Washington DC Department of Health said the city will give out the remaining first doses of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine to the people at high risk of contracting the disease, instead of waiting on the second dose of the two-shot regimen, The Washington Post reported.

"Rather than holding back doses, we’re able to get more people vaccinated and contain this quicker," Patrick Ashley, senior deputy director of the DC Department of Health explained in an interview with the Post.

The move goes against the advice of the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as it may delay the city's ability to give out second shots to those who already received the first one, being that the two doses are meant to be administered 28 days apart.
