European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and the European Commission issued a joint statement on Thursday commending Finland on its "swift action" in detaining the oil tanker suspected of damaging undersea data cables in the Baltic Sea.
"We strongly condemn any deliberate destruction of Europe's critical infrastructure. The suspected vessel is part of Russia's shadow fleet, which threatens security and the environment, while funding Russia's war budget. We will propose further measures, including sanctions, to target this fleet," the statement said.
The Commission and Kallas also noted they will increase their efforts to protect the submarine data cables, including "enhanced information exchange, new detection technologies." The statement claimed that currently, there is no risk to the security of electricity supply in the region.
