German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was officially nominated as his party's lead candidate for the upcoming snap federal election in February, Deutsche Welle reported on Monday.
The center-left Social Democrats (SPD) made its choice after two weeks of internal discussions. The choice was reportedly between Scholz and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. According to the report, citing polls, Pistorius is currently the most popular politician in Germany. However, last week the German defense minister withdrew from running for chancellor and endorsed Scholz.
The Green Party nominated German Deputy Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck as its lead candidate two weeks ago. Germany is set to hold its federal election on February 23, 2025.
