John Podesta, White House senior adviser for clean energy innovation and implementation, will replace United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and take over the role of top US climate diplomat, the White House announced.
Podesta has served as a senior adviser to the president since September 2022, and will be stationed in the White House during his new role, which will not interfere with his ongoing job of overseeing the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act. "We need to keep meeting the gravity of this moment, and there is no one better than John Podesta to make sure we do," White House chief of staff Jeff Zients said in a statement.
Kerry's departure was recently reported by various US media outlets, sharing that Kerry will leave to focus on US President Joe Biden's reelection campaign.
