United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated on Wednesday that he is "truly sorry" for the suffering that people experienced during the pandemic and that he takes "full responsibility" for the situation.
Johnson defended the government's response saying that "no one can accuse us of being complacent," as he labeled the country's lockdown as "traumatic" and stated that it was "one of the most difficult decisions" he had to make. Additionally, he said that when it comes to the pandemic he was confident the government took decisions that were right for the British public at that time. However, he also asserted that the UK turned the corner on the pandemic, despite persistent concerns that the Indian COVID-19 variant may lead to a national surge in cases.
The government's early pandemic response was put into question following the testimony of the ex-Jonson senior aide Dominic Cummings earlier today, who stated that there was no plan to handle the pandemic in March 2020 and that "the government fell disastrously short of the standards the public should expect."
