Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz stated on Saturday that he will seek snap elections as soon as possible following the resignation of Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache.

The chancellor said he asked President Alexander Van der Bellen "to hold new elections as early as possible."

After the vice chancellor announced at noon today he was resigning his post, thousands of people gathered in front of Federal Chancellery of Austria in Vienna, demanding new elections.
