Moscow terminates CoE treaties with respect to Russia

Russian State Duma adopted the law on the termination of international treaties of the Council of Europe with respect to the country on Thursday.

The agreements in question include the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which Duma Committee on International Affairs head Leonid Slutsky said will not adversely affect the observance of human rights in Russia as the country has already implemented its principles into national legislation.

Russia submitted the formal letter of withdrawal to the Council in March 2022, following the calls within the international organization to terminate its membership amidst the Ukrainian crisis.
