Netanyahu asserts govt's right to appoint security chief

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Friday his government's authority to appoint the next head of the Shin Bet, following a legal challenge.

Using X, Netanyahu stated, "There will be no civil war!" He emphasized that Israel is a state of law, and it is the government's right to decide on appointments, including the Shin Bet chief. Netanyahu's remarks came after a period of rising tension, with critics questioning the legality of the dismissal.

Earlier during the day, the High Court of Justice issued a temporary injunction, halting the dismissal of Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, until a full hearing is held by April 8. The court's intervention followed a unanimous vote by Netanyahu's cabinet to dismiss Bar, which he called "fundamentally invalid."
