Chinese President Xi Jinping told his United States counterpart Joe Biden during their phone call the previous month about the situation in Taiwan that now is not the moment for a full-scale crisis, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Thursday, citing a source close to the former.
The call, which occurred on July 28, came amid the renewed tensions concerning both Beijing and Washingon's stance toward Taiwan and a few days before US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island. During the conversation, Xi warned Biden against "playing with fire" on the matter. On the other hand, Biden told Xi China should avoid taking steps that could endanger regional stability.
Meanwhile, US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Gregory Meeks asserted Washington is seeking to avoid a conflict over Taiwan similar to the one in Ukraine.
