Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for his third term on Friday following contested elections held in July 2024 and extended his rule over Venezuela until 2031.
On July 28, 2024, Maduro was proclaimed the winner of the presidential election by the country's electoral authorities controlled by Maduro's United Socialist Party of Venezuela. However, Venezuela's opposition claimed that its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, won 67% of the votes, while Maduro obtained only 30%.
The day before Maduro's inauguration, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was detained after an anti-government protest in Caracas. Before being freed, she was forced to record several videos, according to her organization, Comando con Venezuela.
