Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a snap election on Sunday, requesting the governor general to dissolve the Parliament and setting the date for April 28, confirming previous reports.

"We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of [United States] President [Donald] Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty. Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada," Carney said.

Carney stated that there will be a five-week election campaign for the 343 seats or districts in Canada's House of Commons. He noted that the country needs "big" and "positive" change in order to deal with Trump's tariffs.
