The Department of Justice released Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report to the public on Thursday, shortly after Attorney General William Barr's press conference.
In the report, Mueller noted that United States President Donald Trump was not involved in the underlying crime "related to Russian election interference," noting that the president told him he had "no recollection" of possible Russian support. According to the report, Trump also said that he knew nothing about the disputed Trump Tower meeting.
When it comes to obstruction of justice charges, the special counsel said that he lacked evidence to conclude whether Trump obstructed justice, but noted that the US leader had "unique and powerful means" to commit the offense. Mueller concluded that he will leave it to Congress to determine whether the obstruction of justice really occurred.
"We concluded that Congress has authority to prohibit a president’s corrupt use of his authority in order to protect the integrity of the administration of justice," the report read, adding that if the investigation team had "confidence" that the "President clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state."
