Jeffrey Donaldson (pictured), the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the strongest British loyalist party in Northern Ireland, revealed on Monday that the party will vote against the "Stormont Brake" proposed by the United Kingdom and the European Union in their Windsor Framework plan.
Last month, the "Stormont Brake" was described by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as a tool for the Northern Ireland Assembly to prevent controversial EU goods laws from applying in the region.
"Whilst representing real progress the 'brake' does not deal with the fundamental issue which is the imposition of EU law by the [Northern Ireland] Protocol," Donaldson argued today, adding that the DUP still plans to keep working with Downing Street "to try to restore the delicate political balances within Northern Ireland."
