The European Parliament filed a lawsuit on Friday against the European Commission with the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to apply a regulation "allowing the European Union to suspend payments from the EU budget to member states in which the rule of law is under threat."

"We expect the European Commission to act in a consistent manner and live up to what President von der Leyen stated during our last plenary discussion on this subject. Words have to be turned into deeds," said the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli. Although not specified in the president's statement, the lawsuit comes amid a dispute between the EU and Poland over its controversial changes to the judiciary and recent constitutional court rulings. On Wednesday, the ECJ ruled Poland has to pay €1 million a day until it complies with EU laws.
