German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's economic adviser Joerg Kukies (pictured) is set to become the country's new finance minister after Scholz dismissed previous Finance Minister Christian Lindner, AFP reported on Thursday, citing a government source.
Kukies worked at Goldman Sachs from 2004 to 2018 and served as state secretary in the German Finance Ministry from 2018 to 2021. When Scholz became chancellor in 2021 he named Kukies as his chief economic adviser.
Following Lindner's dismissal, Scholz revealed that he wants to hold early elections in March. Meanwhile, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz called for a confidence vote against Scholz's government.
