Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told reporters on Thursday that if the United States imposes tariffs on his country "there will be reciprocity" in the form of Brazil imposing retaliatory tariffs on goods imported from the US.

"He just has to respect the sovereignty of other countries. He was elected to govern the USA. Other presidents were elected to govern other countries," Lula said speaking about his US colleague Donald Trump.

Trump previously mentioned the possibility of imposing tariffs on BRICS member states such as Brazil, India, and China, adding that they "really mean harm to" the US.
