SCOTUS to hear arguments in TikTok ban case

UNSPLASH / SOLEN_FEYISSA

The United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) announced on Wednesday is set to review the appeal by Bytedance and TikTok, which seeks to delay the implementation of legislation that mandates either the sale or prohibition of the popular short-video platform. The court will hear arguments on January 10.

TikTok previously requested the Supreme Court to halt the enforcement of a regulation that threatens to ban the app unless its parent company, ByteDance, based in China, divests it to a buyer outside of China by January 19, following the refusal by a federal court.

The law, passed with bipartisan support and signed by US President Joe Biden in April, cites national security risks posed by ByteDance's ownership. TikTok had argued the ban violates free speech protections.
