United States State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated on Monday that Washington is currently working with its partners in the Middle East to gather precise information on the reported attack in Syria's capital city of Damascus which is said to have killed a top Iranian commander.
During the regular press briefing, the spokesperson declined to reveal whether the United States was informed beforehand about the purported strike conducted by Israeli forces in Damascus, underlining Washington's concern about "any" actions in the region that could further heighten the tensions. Miller argued that the reported attack, which is said to have also taken the lives of up to seven people, should not have a negative effect on the hostage release talks between Israel and Hamas.
According to Iranian state media, the strike destroyed the Iranian consulate building in Syria's capital.
