European Union Economics Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici stated on Tuesday that the bloc will "closely monitor" the French deficit after the country's President Emmanuel Macron revealed yesterday the new measures in response to the violent protests, AFP reported.
"The European Commission will closely monitor the impact of the announcements made by President Macron on the French deficit and any financing arrangements," the commissioner stressed.
His comments come after Macron promised a €100 euro increase to the minimum wage next year and urged companies to pay out bonuses to workers. The demonstrations initially staged to voice opposition to Macron's decision to raise fossil fuel taxes, continued despite the government deciding to abandon the fuel price hikes. Over the weekend, French authorities arrested over 1,700 people who took part in the protests.
