Europe closes flat to negative ahead of Fed decision

European stock markets closed the Tuesday session with flat to negative results, as traders eagerly anticipated the upcoming announcement of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision scheduled for tomorrow. Market participants also scrutinized the most recent numbers regarding inflation in the United States, the unemployment rate in the United Kingdom, and economic sentiment in Germany.

At the closing bell, the German DAX and Britain's FTSE 100 traded flat. The CAC 40 fell 0.11% as Alstom SA lost 2.34%. The Euro Stoxx 50 went down 0.08% while Banco Santander declined 1.48% at the same time.

The euro gained 0.23% to the dollar at 5:29 pm CET to sell for $1.07891. At the same time, the pound sterling traded flat compared to the greenback, changing hands for $1.25499.
